Long Grove Apple Haus Closing is a Heartbreak

Let Long Grove Apple Haus Closing Be a Wake-up Call!

Last fall when the Farmside Country Store and Winery in Long Grove closed, I was surprised. It had always been there. A sweet store sitting high on the corner of Old McHenry and Robert Parker Coffin Roads, it has been there in some form since 1869. Sure, the building is still there but it sadly stands empty. When I read the news that the Long Grove Apple Haus closed, I was shocked.

Having lived in Long Grove for over 25 years, I have seen stores come and go. But Farmside and the Apple Haus? These two stores were cornerstones of the village. Many a cider donut has been eaten in our house, brought to friends’ homes and to Coldwell Banker events. Our daughter Kristin rode her bike or walked to her first job at the Apple Haus. I’ve talked with others over the past few days and the sentiment seems to be the same: We haven’t just lost stores, we’ve lost a part of our community.

As a community we need to take action. We can’t just wait for the next small business to close and lament its passing. There are things that we can do right now and the very first is to shop at those businesses. I know that it’s sometimes easier to purchase a greeting card at the grocery store but I promise you that it’s not as much fun as shopping at Diane’s Hallmark in Lake Zurich. The women there are helpful and fun. It’s probably more convenient to run to the mall but have you been to Within Reach in Long Grove for a gift? You’ll be delighted by the beautifully arranged displays of unique items.

Next, tell everyone about your experiences at these establishments. When you eat at Enzo and Lucia’s, D&J Bistro or any of our local restaurants, let your friends know how great the food is. Tell everyone you know about the fine products and experiences at our locally owned businesses. Visit yelp.com and Yelp about it!

Adorable Baby Items at Within Reach

I’m committing to blog about at least one small business in the Lake Zurich area communities each week. If you know of one that you’d like to have featured, contact me. After you’ve read my blog posts, share them on Facebook, Twitter and other social networking sites. Together we can get the word out and help our local business owners prosper.

St. Francis de Sales Lake Zurich Jubilee Garden Fall Sale

Support Lake Zurich Area Food Pantries by Purchasing Pumpkins and Corn Stalks

As I drive down Route 22 in Lake Zurich, I can see the activity at the St. Francis de Sales Jubilee Garden as they prepare for their fall sale. The sale will begin on Saturday, October 1st, from 9 am to noon and continue on Saturdays in October. The Jubilee Garden is non-profit, self-sustaining and relies on volunteers and financial support from the community to stay in “business”. This is their only fund raiser this year. Available for sale will be orange pumpkins from $1-$3 each, Cinderella pumpkins @5 each, and corn stalks @$5 each.

The Jubilee Garden grew approximately 2000 pounds of produce and 500 ears of corn this year that is donated to local food pantries including Emmaus House Community Dinner, St. Vincent de Paul and Alpine Church. The Garden land is donated for use by a local family and garden volunteers come from many organizations including Girl Scouts and Boy Scouts. Helpers also come from high schools doing service projects. The Lake Zurich Fire Department lends a helping hand by filling the water reservoirs. Hawthorn Gardens provides a variety of plants. It’s great to see so many people in the community coming together to provide fresh, organic, locally grown produce to those who may not otherwise have it.

The St. Francis de Sales Jubilee Garden is located in Lake Zurich on Route 22, about ¼ mile east of Quentin. Pop by and purchase a few pumpkins and corn stalks to decorate the exterior of your home. You’ll be helping to purchase the items needed for next year’s garden. At the same time, you’ll be getting great prices on cool fall items to enhance the curb appeal of your home. I’ll be stopping by this Saturday before the Long Grove Apple Fest. Hope to see you there!

Bushels of Fun at Long Grove Apple Fest!

Long Grove’s 19th Annual Apple Fest Sept. 30, October 1, 2

Jane Austen said “Good apple pies are a considerable part of our domestic happiness”. If you agree, then you’ll be absolutely blissful this weekend at Long Grove’s 19th Annual Apple Fest! Apple Fest is my favorite of all the Long Grove festivals. Cool, crisp weather, yummy food booths, entertainment, great shopping, and FESTIVAL DONUTS(!) are all great reasons to visit Long Grove Apple Fest.

Apple Fest has a full line-up of entertainment. There’s sure to be something that a-peels (sorry, I couldn’t help it!) to everyone. Bands and performing artists will be featured at the Gazebo, Towner Green, Beans and Leaves, Covered Bridge and Fountain Square throughout the weekend. Long Grove features its own “Man vs. Food” with the Ice Cream Eating Contest and Apple Pie Eating Contest.  There are child friendly activities including face painting.

While you’re strolling the cobblestone paths, stop in at one of the 70 Long Grove stores or restaurants. Many will have apple themed dishes and merchandise. Food vendors will be set up throughout the village offering not only apple creations but other goodies like roasted corn. You can create your own caramel apple outside the Apple Haus.

I can smell the food and hear the music from my Long Grove home. If you’d like to check out homes for sale in the Long Grove area, click here to see some of the homes currently on the market.

Apple Fest is fun for the whole family. The big challenge will be finding enough time to see everything. The second biggest will be to only eat one apple cider donut sprinkled with cinnamon and sugar that are made special for Apple Fest. I hope to see many of my friends this weekend at Apple Fest!

23rd Annual Long Grove Art Fest August 20-21

Acclaimed Long Grove Art Fest Returns

The Long Grove Art Fest draws people from near and far. And why not? With over 90 juried exhibitors showing in mediums that include oil, jewelry, photography, and sculpture, there is something to suit almost everyone’s artistic palate. Visitors will also enjoy free music, entertainment and the famous festival food!

This year my friend Sis Jones’ brother, Wes Cowley, will be exhibiting at the fest. Wes has come all the way from Florida to show his photography this weekend. Take a look at his website to see a sampling of his work. I found his “Faces” quite captivating!

One thing that I definitely want to see is ArtBeat Live. Elliot From creates speed paintings in under ten minutes! Elliot is a local artist and has been seen on local news shows. He has also done quite a few paintings at charity auctions. Check out his videos to see some amazing art. Seeing him work should be quite the treat. I wonder if we have to stand VERY far back?! Elliot will be painting at 3pm on Saturday and Noon on Sunday.

A festival in Long Grove would not be complete without great music. On Saturday at 3:30, popular 7th Heaven will be performing. If you’re a Cubs fan you’ll recognize their “This Summer’s Gonna Last Forever” from the telecasts. On Sunday, The Downhome Sophisticates will show their versatility as they perform selections from Johnny Cash to Bruce Springsteen. Howard Levy’s Acoustic Express entertains at 4pm on Sunday. Just as the name implies, there are no amps and sometimes no microphone!

Whew! That’s a lot of stuff to see in only two days! Festivals in Long Grove are always crowded, so get there early. Admission to the fest is free and free parking is available at Stempel Parking Lot. The Long Grove Art Fest is held in downtown Long Grove (intersection of Old McHenry and Robert Parker Coffin Roads) on Saturday, August 20th from 11 am to 7pm and Sunday, August, 21st from 10 am to 5 pm.

Long Grove Summer Concert Series Begins July 10th

Free Sunday Concerts July 10th through August 28th

Long Grove’s sixth summer concert series begins next Sunday, July 10th at 4pm. With very diverse styles of music, the eight concerts will be held at the new Pavilion which was generously built by Sunset Foods. The first band to perform at the Long Grove Summer Concert Series is the Maxwell Street Klezmer Band. “Klezmer” originally referred to ancient Hebrew musical instruments. Around the middle ages it became attached to Jewish folk musicians. The Maxwell Street Klezmer Band is one of the Midwest’s premier Klezmer bands. They will entertain us with rich, jazzy sounds of the swing era.

All of the Sunday concerts begin at 4 pm and will end about 6 pm. Arrive early and stop by some of the downtown stores. You can pick up a bottle of wine at the Glunz Family Winery and some snacks at the Farmside Grocery. Or pop by Timmy’s Sandwiches or Enzo and Lucia for some take-out fare to enjoy during the concert. Bring a blanket and enjoy a musical afternoon in Long Grove.

All concerts are held at the pavilion in Long Grove’s Fountain Square. Fountain Square is located between Old McHenry Road and Robert Coffin Road just northeast of the main intersection of Downtown Long Grove. The square is adjacent to the Archer Municipal Parking Lot. I can hear the music from my house but it doesn’t compare to actually being there. I hope you can take advantage of a few of the Long Grove free concerts!

Long Grove Strawberry Fest This Weekend

Visit Strawberry Fest June 24, 25 and 26

It’s that time of year again! June brings Long Grove’s famous Strawberry Fest, one of Chicagoland’s premier outdoor festivals. If you’re looking for things to do this weekend, put Strawberry Fest at the top of your list. I’ve attended Strawberry Fest for many years and I promise that you’ll enjoy it! In addition to the berry fine treats, there’s music, entertainment, and many of historic Long Grove’s shops will have strawberry inspired items.

The strawberries are what draw the crowd. In addition to fresh berries, you’ll find smoothies, pies, tarts, ice cream and my very favorite – festival donuts! Of course other food items will be available. I can smell the roasting corn all the way down at my house.

What would an outdoor festival be without entertainment? There will be continuous live music on six stages all three days. Kids will enjoy the rides, pony rides, face painters and balloon artists. There’s even an ice cream eating contest for all ages on Saturday and Sunday. If you crave an alcoholic beverage, there will be beer, wine and mai-tai booths for the adults.

Historic Long Grove is located in Lake County just northwest of Rtes. 83 and 53. Strawberry Fest will run Friday, June 24th through Sunday, June 26th. Hours on Friday and Sunday are 10 am to 6 pm and Saturday from 10 am to 8 pm. There is abundant free parking available so bring a carload and spend the day!

Long Grove Farmers’ Market Opens June 12th

Visit Long Grove Farmers’ Market Sundays from 8 am to 1 pm

The Long Grove Farmers’ Market is opening next Sunday, June 12th at 8 am. It will be held every Sunday from 8 am to 1pm through October. 2010 was the first year for the market and I spent many a lovely Sunday morning there. Mary Ann at the Village Tavern organizes the weekly event and promises that this year will be even better than last!

In addition to tasty produce, there are flowers, handmade soaps, fresh baked goods, jams, jellies and other handmade items. I really have to stay away from the chocolate croissants! Childrens’ events and a featured one-of-a-kind artisan demonstration occur each week.

A visit to Long Grove Farmers’ market instills a sense of community. You get some great produce and other products and have fun mingling with your neighbors. The vendors are friendly, helpful, and always ready to take a minute to teach you about their products or just visit. I’ll be featuring some of the vendors in Terry’s Towns over the course of the summer.

The Long Grove Farmers’ Market is held in historic Long Grove at Towner Green across the street from the Village Tavern. For those who may not be familiar with the area, Towner Green is located on Old McHenry Rd just north of Robert Parker Coffin Road. On Festival weekends it moves to the Hotel parking lot, just north of Towner Green. I look forward to seeing you there!

Nature and Life in Long Grove – Ducklings Hatch!

Ducklings Hatch in My Long Grove Yard!

Last week I wrote about the robins’ nests in my yard and gave a few tips on how to attract birds to your yard. I can’t tell you how to cause a duck to lay eggs in your yard, but I was so enthralled with the mama duck in my yard that I just had to share the story and pictures!

Rarely do we use our front door so it may have been a while before I spotted the duck nest. Located behind a whiskey barrel and protected from the wind by the house, a brave mama duck built her nest in the bark. It was hard to see – she was very good at camouflage. Each day after discovering it, we would look out there to be sure she had survived any area predators. Happily, she did. Although we were sure that our sweet dog Quincy wouldn’t bother her, we thought that he may be curious and accidentally disturb them. He never even noticed!

It takes about 28 days for duck eggs to hatch. Once hatching begins, all the eggs will hatch within 24 hours. I searched the internet to see how long they might remain in the nest after hatching. Reports varied from 6 hours to 24 hours. How was I ever going to see them? As it turned out, I was lucky enough to be home on hatching day.

Each time I would come near the nest to take pictures, Mama Duck would hustle her brood back into the nest and sit on it. I was so tempted to pick one up to hold the fuzzy little body just for a minute. Before I foolishly did so, I remembered that my son Michael tried that once at a lake in Michigan and it didn’t turn out well! I had to be satisfied with the pictures.

Periodically (about every 15 minutes!) I would check the nest to see if they were still there. I realized that I was really bothering them so I tried to stay away. Of course, I missed the voyage. My husband came in to tell me that my duck mom was taking her babies to the water. I grabbed my camera and ran down to the pond for their first swim. There were 11 ducklings! No wonder they can’t stay in the nest very long.

Last weekend the ducklings came to feast at the bird feeder. Wow, are they big! My husband reminds me that these cute babies that I love right now are the same ones that I will complain about next spring when they are quacking at 4:30 am. Ah, the circle of life.

5 Things To Do in Your Lake Zurich Area Garden This Weekend

Planting, Pruning and Planning Keep Your Garden Blooming

I’m really looking forward to Memorial Day weekend. We’ve planted pots of annuals, cleaned the outdoor furniture and polished up the grill. Well maintained gardens enhance our homes. If the weather cooperates with the first long weekend of summer, we’ll be doing a little work in our Long Grove yard. Here are five things that you can do in your Lake Zurich area garden this weekend:

1. Prune spring flowering shrubs: My lilacs have finished blooming so it’s time to prune. Prune your spring flowering shrubs and bushes shortly after blooming to ensure healthy blooms next year.

2. Feed and treat roses: I’m not very good with roses but I do have several Knock Out varieties. They bloom all season when I feed and treat them. I use Bayer 3 in 1 because it’s easy! One product fertilizes, controls insects (including nasty Japanese beetles!) and prevents disease.

3. Plant your tomatoes: Mmm, I can’t wait for the first home grown tomato! I’ll be stopping by Hawthorn Gardens in Hawthorn Woods. They have a big selection of tomato plants that have varying grow times. I’ll plant several varieties ranging from 52 to 80 days so I’ll have yummy tomatoes all season.

4. Bring your indoor plants outside: Tropicals love a summer vacation outdoors. Be sure to protect them from strong winds. Most articles that I read tell me to take them out gradually – an hour or two a day to start. That takes an awful lot of time so I don’t do it. Beware – If you don’t do this you risk losing some of them!

5. Visit the Chicago Botanic Garden: You’ve worked hard so take some time to enjoy one of our area treasures. Stroll through the Garden or take advantage of one of the scheduled events. This weekend the Garden hosts the Northshore Iris and Daylily Society show along with the Garden Chef Series.

The weekend won’t be all work for us! I’m already starting to plan my weekend barbeque menus, praying that the weather will be beautiful, and planning a trip to Chicago Botanic Garden.  I’m ready for summer!
