Long Grove Apple Haus Closing is a Heartbreak

Let Long Grove Apple Haus Closing Be a Wake-up Call!

Last fall when the Farmside Country Store and Winery in Long Grove closed, I was surprised. It had always been there. A sweet store sitting high on the corner of Old McHenry and Robert Parker Coffin Roads, it has been there in some form since 1869. Sure, the building is still there but it sadly stands empty. When I read the news that the Long Grove Apple Haus closed, I was shocked.

Having lived in Long Grove for over 25 years, I have seen stores come and go. But Farmside and the Apple Haus? These two stores were cornerstones of the village. Many a cider donut has been eaten in our house, brought to friends’ homes and to Coldwell Banker events. Our daughter Kristin rode her bike or walked to her first job at the Apple Haus. I’ve talked with others over the past few days and the sentiment seems to be the same: We haven’t just lost stores, we’ve lost a part of our community.

As a community we need to take action. We can’t just wait for the next small business to close and lament its passing. There are things that we can do right now and the very first is to shop at those businesses. I know that it’s sometimes easier to purchase a greeting card at the grocery store but I promise you that it’s not as much fun as shopping at Diane’s Hallmark in Lake Zurich. The women there are helpful and fun. It’s probably more convenient to run to the mall but have you been to Within Reach in Long Grove for a gift? You’ll be delighted by the beautifully arranged displays of unique items.

Next, tell everyone about your experiences at these establishments. When you eat at Enzo and Lucia’s, D&J Bistro or any of our local restaurants, let your friends know how great the food is. Tell everyone you know about the fine products and experiences at our locally owned businesses. Visit yelp.com and Yelp about it!

Adorable Baby Items at Within Reach

I’m committing to blog about at least one small business in the Lake Zurich area communities each week. If you know of one that you’d like to have featured, contact me. After you’ve read my blog posts, share them on Facebook, Twitter and other social networking sites. Together we can get the word out and help our local business owners prosper.

Regional Manager Jeff Polanzi and Friend at a previous event

This event has been sponsored by Coldwell Banker Buffalo Grove agents almost every year for the past 25 years or so. It’s always been fun and has evolved from dressing up and handing out pumpkins in the parking lot to today’s “festival” with added activities. This year we’re asking those who can to bring a nonperishable food item that we will donate to the Vernon Township food pantry.

Thanks to Lori Amato (American Home Shield), David Weinberg (PHH Home Mortgage), and Cindy Lachowicz (Burnet Title) for assisting us with the refreshments, decorations and prizes. They’re a very important part of our team and will be helping out at the Festival on Saturday.

Our Coldwell Banker office is located at 350 Half Day Road, Buffalo Grove. Our agents and support staff are working hard to make this our best event ever and we’re looking forward to seeing you there!

Didier Farms Pumpkin Fest in Prairie View

Fun For the Whole Family at Didier Farms

Several weeks ago I enjoyed a walk through a corn maze in Wisconsin with my daughter and her family. It was so much fun that I wanted to check out local corn mazes and pumpkin farms to recommend to readers. I had to look no farther than (almost) my own back yard.  Each day as I drive to my Coldwell Banker real estate office in Buffalo Grove, I pass by Didier Farms in Prairie View. Didier is the place where I took my children to purchase their pumpkins when they were small. But it sure has expanded over the years! The whole family can spend a fun-filled day there with a variety of activities.

The Didier Pumpkin Fest is open Monday through Friday from 9 am to 5 pm and Saturdays and Sundays from 10 am to 5 pm through October 31st. In addition to buying the perfect pumpkin, here are some of the activities:

• Hay rides • Petting zoo • Corn maze • Straw maze • Pony rides
• Moon bounce • Mechanical rides • Bird exhibit• White tiger exhibit

Didier also has beautiful mums in a plethora of colors to decorate your home. Parking and admission are free. Check out the Didier website for information on activity costs. I recommend that you get there early; the parking lot is filling up when I drive by in the morning.

Things certainly have changed at Didier over the years. It’s nice to see that this family-owned, local business continues to thrive with support from the community.

Vernon Hills Police Department Organizes Veterans’ Coat Drive

Donate a Gently Used Coat and Help a Lake County Veteran

We owe our veterans a huge debt of gratitude. There’s an easy way for residents of Lake County to show their thanks. The Vernon Hills Police Department, in conjunction with the Veterans’ Assistance Commission, is collecting coats for Lake County veterans and their families. Vernon Hills High School (September 30) and Grayslake High School (October 14) join in the effort by organizing a collection of coats during one of their football games. The Vernon Hills Police Department is also accepting donations.

Mike Peck is the Superintendent of The Veterans’ Assistance Commission. On October 18, 2011, they will be conducting a Stand Down for homeless veterans and veterans in need.  A Stand Down allows veterans in need to receive a medical and dental assessment, a haircut, and a referral for other counseling services, if needed.  With winter approaching, the VAC has long strived toward the goal of providing each veteran in need with a winter coat. More than 300 Lake County Veterans are expected to participate this year. Last year the winter gear was all taken within the first two hours.  They need our community support!

The need is greater this year than ever before. 792 Lake County veterans have registered with the Illinois Department of Human Services’ Supplemental Nutrition Assistance program. These veterans and their families are at risk of becoming homeless as they struggle to make rent or mortgage payments.

Take a look through your closets and find a gently used men’s, women’s or children’s coat. Or, shop a sale and purchase a new one! Also accepted will be new hats, gloves and scarves. If you’re a fan, attend the Vernon Hills or Grayslake High School footbal games and bring a coat. I will also accept donations at the Coldwell Banker Buffalo Grove office (350 Half Day Road) and deliver them to the Vernon Hills Police Department (740 Lakeview Parkway).  If you live in the area and have a donation but just can’t get it to any of the donation points, contact me and I’ll pick it up!

Lake Zurich Real Estate Results May 2011

Pending Lake County Il SalesWhat’s Happening in Lake Zurich Real Estate?

What’s happening in the Lake Zurich Real Estate market? Real estate in Lake Zurich has felt like it’s flying off the market. Well, comparatively speaking anyway! I’ve had several real estate clients looking at single family homes in Lake Zurich and it seems like they’re moving quickly. I took a close look at the market report for May, 2011 Lake Zurich real estate. The statistics don’t look quite like my experience! In May, 2011, 12 single family homes closed at an average sale price of $228,417 compared to 25 closed in May of 2010 at an average sale price of $281,694.

Does this mean that prices have fallen by the 18.9% reflected in those statistics? No! What it tells us is that homes in the higher price ranges have not closed thereby bringing down the average. There are also fewer homes on the market in Lake Zurich this year. In May, 2010, there were 176 single family properties for sale compared to 228 in May of 2010. Market time has also increased. Average days on market (DOM) for May, 2011 were 171. That can see like an eternity to a seller but there are things that you can do to help reduce time on the market. If you’d like, you can access the full Lake Zurich May 2011 real estate report.

For several years I’ve been telling my clients that real estate is a price war and a beauty contest. You have to win at both to sell your property in the shortest amount of time at the best price that the market will bear. That theory is proven by a home that my client closed on in May. It is located in the Chasewood subdivision. The home showed beautifully and was priced competitively. It sold in just 57 days, well below the average of 171.

The most important thing that you can do to sell your home is hire an agent like me who knows the area, is technologically savvy and stays up-to-date on the market. An added bonus is that I’m part of the Coldwell Banker Residential Brokerage team – leaders in the industry.

All statistics used in this analysis were supplied by Midwest Real Estate Data, LLC (MRED). If you’d like a report on your town, I’d be happy to provide it!

5 Things Lake Zurich Area Home Buyers are Searching For

Easy Steps to Update Your Home

Real Estate for Sale Call Terry

The spring real estate market is here! I’ve been busy taking buyers to homes in and around Lake Zurich. They’re in different price ranges and their wants and needs are different but there are some things that they all look for. Read on to see what they want and some simple updates to prepare your home for the market or just update for your own enjoyment.

1. Updated kitchens: It doesn’t matter if they are looking in Lake Zurich, Wauconda, Buffalo Grove or Long Grove, home buyers want updated kitchens. They’d all love to have new cabinets, solid surface counters and stainless steel appliances. If that’s not in your budget, consider doing a few simpler things. A fresh coat of paint works wonders. If your cabinets have seen better days, consider painting them and adding new hardware. If you’re considering new appliances, see Janette Iversen at Abt (1200 N. Milwaukee in Glenview) and tell her that Terry sent you!

2. Updated baths: Make it sparkle! New faucets can make the whole vanity look newer. Paint vanities and replace hardware. A new shower curtain and fluffy towels help to make it look inviting.

3. Clutter-free homes: While showing a home last week in Lake Zurich, my clients were quite distracted by the walls full of photos and children’s toys throughout the home. They commented that the house wasn’t big enough for them. The reality is that it was larger than another home they were considering. I am not a proponent of removing every personal item. I think it makes homes seem cold. But it’s important to remove enough of them so the buyer doesn’t feel like he or she is intruding.

4. Clean houses: For years I’ve been telling home sellers that the way you live is not necessarily the way that you sell. While a few dishes in the sink don’t usually bother me at home, (Note to my family: It’s so easy to put them in the dishwasher. It’s right next to the sink!), it does bother potential buyers. They want to see everything spic and span. So keep the dishes out of the sink, toothpaste off the mirrors and cabinets neatly organized.

5. Curb appeal: Everyone wants to love driving up to their home. While showing homes in Lake Zurich and Mundelein this weekend, I was slipping and sliding on driveways and sidewalks. Keep driveways and paths clear. Don’t underestimate the power of your front door. A fresh coat of paint and updated hardware works wonders. In this weather, that’s probably all you can do outside for now. In a few weeks, I’ll tell you how to use cold-hardy plants to spruce up your home.

Staging a home prior to putting it on the market is a top priority. It’s one of the services that I offer as a Realtor. You can see Coldwell Banker’s fact sheet with some great tips for enhancing your home. When you’re ready to make a move, I’ll be happy to come over and help you get your home in tip-top shape.

2nd Annual Coldwell Banker Buffalo Grove Blood Drive

Give a Little – It Helps a Lot!

Please join us for Coldwell Banker Buffalo Grove’s 2nd Annual Blood Drive on February 11th from 12 noon to 6 pm. Last year’s event was quite a success and our goal is to beat last year’s donations. If you donated last year, thank you! If you’re planning to donate this year, try to make an appointment. That will save you time in the lines that we experienced at our first event.

Our drive is coordinated through Lifesource. Recently I read stories of donors  as well as recipient stories. They are inspiring and really drive home the importance of blood donations. Lifesource will again have a mobile unit onsite at our Coldwell Banker office located at 350 Half Day Road in Buffalo Grove. It’s a centralized location so we can make it easy for those in Buffalo Grove, Lake Zurich, Long Grove and surrounding areas to make a donation.

After your donation, stop back in our office and enjoy a few treats. In addition to the joy of giving, we have memories of last year’s fun with realtors and clients in the office after their donations. If you need more information, contact me. We hope to see you there!

Yogi Bear Client Appreciation Event

Yogi Bear Movie Saturday, December 18th

Have you responded to my client appreciation event yet? It’s going to be a ton of fun and I’m really excited about it. Through the years, I have done lots of different things to thank my real estate clients not only for their business, but for our continued friendships. This is the first time that I’m hosting a movie event and I’m anticipating a sell-out crowd!

“Yogi Bear” releases this Friday, December 17th and early reviews are excellent! Reviewers are saying that fans of Yogi are going to love this. It’s a live action/ CGI film that has a greedy politician threatening to shut down Jellystone Park. That wouldn’t happen in real life, would it?? If that happens, Yogi (Dan Aykroyd) and his lovable sidekick Boo Boo (Justin Timberlake) will be left without a home. To save the park, Yogi and Boo Boo team up with Ranger Smith, played by Tom Cavanagh.

I’ve spent the week finalizing the details and making goodie bags for the kids. I couldn’t have done it by myself. Special thanks to Coldwell Banker Buffalo Grove’s marketing coordinator, Nancy D, for all of her help in getting this together ”Yogi Bear”  isn’t just a “kid” movie! I’ve had several clients call to say they are coming because they remember watching Yogi when THEY were kids. If you haven’t responded yet, call or email me. I’d love to see you there!

Fun Holiday Events at Knupper Nursery in Palatine

Knupper Offers Holiday Events for the Whole Family!

Visions of greenery, berries and bows are filling my head! Those who know me know that I love to garden. That doesn’t stop just because the weather has gotten colder. Now I’ll put my efforts toward creating beautiful winter pots. I’ll be crafting them for the front of my Long Grove home and my Coldwell Banker office in Buffalo Grove. Knupper has everything that I need to do that along with some great holiday events that are fun for the whole family.

This weekend (Saturday & Sunday, November 13th and 14th), Santa will be stopping by for that first photo op with the kids. Why not take this opportunity to get that perfect picture before all of the craziness of the holiday season?

The Winter Container Garden Workshop takes place next weekend. When I first started making winter pots, I attended this workshop and it’s full of great information and a lot of fun. I loved the help that I got from the staff and seeing what others were creating. The fee is $45 and includes all the materials you need. The first workshop takes place on Friday, November 19th at 2pm.

The weekend of November 20th and 21st brings the Christmas Festival to Knupper. Santa’s reindeer will be there on the 20th from 1pm – 3pm. Children can pet and feed the live reindeer. Let’s not forget our pets. Pet pictures with Santa can be taken on November 21st from 1pm – 3pm. I love that they’re accepting donations for Save-A-Pet at that time.

These are just a few of the events that Knupper is offering for the holiday season. For a full list of holiday happenings, visit their website. Knupper is located at 1801 N. Rand Road in Palatine.
